The Latta Family
John Latta knew many Cherokee leaders in South Carolina before he moved his large family to western Arkansas, which bordered the Cherokee Nation.
The new homestead he established on the site of current day Evansville, AR was called The Lord’s Vineyard. He was a farmer, furniture maker, implement maker, inventor and community leader. Several of his children were closely linked with the Cherokee Nation after it was moved to Indian Territory. John Latta’s cabin has been preserved and is a permanent exhibit at Prairie Grove Battlefield State Park. The Latta family plays prominently in Hattie’s story beginning in the second book of the series.
